A Rural Retreat In Somerset

Day Out In Wells

Wells, the smallest city in England, offers a charming blend of history, nature, and culture for a perfect day out. Here’s a guide for a full day exploring Wells:

Morning

Wells Cathedral

Start your day by visiting the stunning Wells Cathedral. Famous for its beautiful Gothic architecture, the cathedral has striking scissor arches and intricate stained glass windows.

Construction: Begun around 1175, the main structure was completed by 1239, making it one of the earliest Gothic cathedrals in England. It replaced an earlier church dedicated to St. Andrew.

Interesting Fact - Wells Cathedral houses one of the oldest medieval clocks in the world, dating back to around 1390. The clock features a mechanical display with knights jousting on the hour, and it is still in working order today.

Bishop’s Palace and Gardens

Just next door is the Bishop’s Palace, a medieval palace surrounded by a moat. Explore its beautiful gardens and see the famous swans that ring a bell for food. Stroll through the gardens to enjoy peaceful water features, ancient trees, and scenic views of the palace.

Lunch

Market Place

If you visit on a Wednesday or Saturday, the Market Place comes alive with stalls selling local produce, crafts, and street food. Otherwise, grab a bite at one of the cozy cafés or pubs like The Courtyard Restaurant or Goodfellows for fresh, local food.

Afternoon

Vicars’ Close

After lunch, walk through Vicars’ Close, the oldest residential street in Europe. This medieval lane with its charming old houses feels like stepping back in time.

The Wells & Mendip Museum

Learn more about Wells and the surrounding Mendip Hills at this museum, which offers a fascinating glimpse into local history, geology, and archaeology.

Walk to Wells’ Surroundings

If you enjoy walking, you could take a peaceful stroll along the nearby Mendip Way, or walk to Wookey Hole Caves, just a short drive or longer walk from the city. These caves are famous for their stunning limestone formations.

Evening

Dinner at a Local Restaurant

End your day with a nice meal at one of the local restaurants. The Fountain Inn or Ensemble offer traditional British fare, while Rugantino Restaurant serves excellent Italian cuisine.

Optional Evening Activity:

Look out for evening performances or events at Cedars Hall, a concert hall near the cathedral, or enjoy a relaxed drink at The Crown at Wells, a historic pub.

Wells combines the charm of a small city with the beauty of nature and rich history, offering plenty for a fulfilling day out
